A. Proposal
1. Identify problem or issue
The problem of maintaining aseptic technique and non-contamination of the sterile
field.
a. Explanation
In the operating room, it is of extreme importance to maintain asepsis and prevent
patients from contracting surgical site infections in the post-operative stage. There are many
standards and policies in place to help keep the maintenance of asepsis. Patients receive
antibiotics prophylactically, pre-operative skin cleansers and preps, sterilization of instruments,
monitored room temperature and humidity, and the disinfection the surgical environment.
Infection prevention starts in the operating room by assuring there is no contamination at the
operative site and also by maintaining a sterile field.
2. Investigation
The break in aseptic technique and contamination of equipment is the number one
reason for surgical site infections. My investigation of maintaining asepsis in the OR was done by
research and non-research articles. This is considered to be topic of conversation due to the fact
of the numerous “super bug” infections that are resistant to more and more antibiotics. Staff
working in the operating room taking the proper steps in keeping proper aseptic technique can
greatly decrease the risk of infection.
