Common Figures Of Speech
What is Figure of Speech?
Figure of Speech is a rhetorical way of presenting ideas in a creative way. It is often
use in literature, most especially in poetry.
A.) Simile
Simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two things with the use of
indicators; like and as.
Example:
1. Ann eats like a pig.
This is an example of simile because Ann’s way of eating is directly compared
to a pig, and the indicator used is “like.”
2. Alesha is as pretty as rose.
This is an example of simile because Alesha’s beauty is compared to a rose,
and the indicator used is “us.”
B.) Metaphor
Like simile, metaphor is also a figure of speech that compares two things, however,
without “as” and “like” indicators.
Example:
1.) Her heart is a stone.
One's heart is compared to a stone characteristic.
If will transfigure this sentence into simile, the sentence would be: Her heart is
as hard as stone.
2.) Ben is a tiger.
Ben is compared to a tiger’s bravery.
If will transfigure this sentence into simile, the sentence would be: Ben is as
brave as a tiger.
