Boyd Dubois is a 58 year old Caucasian male s/p elective right hip arthroplasty (hip replacement)
secondary to osteoarthritis
Goals:
• Performs safe patient care using DCN protocol (CO 4, 5, 8)
• Performs a head to toe assessment and recognizes normal and abnormal findings (APPLYING) (CO 2, 7,
8)
• Designs an individualized nursing plan of care based on subjective/objective assessment data
(CREATING) (CO2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8)
• Performs safe oral medication administration (APPLYING) (CO 4, 7, 8)
•Uses therapeutic communication to actively engage patient and family in plan of care (APPLYING) (CO
1, 2, 5, 7)
•Demonstrate team-work and collaboration skills, including delegation (APPLYING)(CO1, 4, 6, 7)
•Evaluates the patient’s responses to nursing interventions (EVALUATING) (CO 1, 3, 7, 8)
Prior to simulation review:
• Conducting basic environmental safety assessment and safety measures
• Calculates and administers medications safely according to the Five Rights
• Performs a head to toe assessment

1. Using your Nursing Diagnoses Handbook list at least 2 nursing diagnoses for a post-op hip
replacement patient. Include three nursing interventions and patient education.
Impaired physical mobility r/t musculoskeletal impairment/surgery pg.620:
Interventions: Assess for fear of falling, screen for mobility skills, assess muscle strength.
Education: teach how to use assistive device, Educate the importance of staying active,
Educate pt on home strength exercises.
Disturbed body image r/t large scar. Pg. 172:
Interventions: Maintain awareness of conditions or changes, provide counseling, assess
pts acceptance of body changes
