Write a short (50-100-word) paragraph response for each question posed below. Submit this
assignment as a Microsoft Word document.
1. Define CAM.

1. Complimentary medicine consists of nontraditional and traditional therapies, whereas
alternative medicine refers to only nontraditional therapies. Today CAM describes
diverse practices or products that are outside of Western medical health promotion,
prevention or treatment and incorporates a variety of beliefs. Being diverse the
common philosophy is that healing comes from within and that CAM is a relationship
between health & healing with a harmony between the mind, body and spirit.

2. Describe the patient who uses CAM the most.
1. Many assumptions of those who use CAM have been debunked. Assumptions like those
using CAM are poorly educated, naïve, gullible, from lower socioeconomic statuses,
used by immigrants and that these people solely utilize CAM. With the increase of use
of CAM more research has been done and shows that the majority of those who use
CAM are women between 35 & 49 yo, highly educated and affluent. And although
immigrants do utilize CAM they are better educated & with a higher socioeconomic
state than assumed. Also, those who utilize CAM also utilize western medicine as well.

3. List some common misconceptions about CAM.
1. Because healthcare professionals haven’t had much education on CAM or their efficacy
many are inadequately informed, have negative views of these therapies, consider
them inappropriate, outside of mainstream. Many believe that many therapies are
unproven and lack scientific evidence of effectiveness, although many therapies have
now been studied. Either way CAM are being utilized by our patients and
misconceptions should be addressed.
4. Identify methods of including the use of CAM in patient education.

1. Allowing for open, non-judgmental, and supportive atmosphere to discuss CAM gives a
gateway to discuss CAM. A patient should feel comfortable in discussing their
experience and use of CAM. Providing for a safe space the healthcare professional also
allows for space to provide teaching on legitimate CAM and even fraudulent therapies.
Dismissing CAM use is something not to do.
5. Discuss the safe use of CAM.

1. Once an openness is established discussing safety topics such as the toxic effects
when herbals or supplements interact with prescribed medication. Also teaching
patients that herbal preparations & supplements are not as monitored and don’t go
through standardized testing to show safety or therapeutic effectiveness before being
advertised. Empowering the patient to seek multiple trusted and legitimate sources for
information before starting a CAM. Also allowing the patient to opportunity to discuss
the CAM with their physician to understand if its proper for them.
6. List ways in which conventional medicine and CAM can be integrated.

1. The healthcare professional can take the first step in bringing up CAM in teaching and
general conversation. Asking questions such as, “Have you tried anything else to help
your symptoms?” or “What have you tried on your own to treat your condition?”. If a
CAM is mentioned that the healthcare worker isn’t familiar with, this should be
admitted allowing for honesty. Attempt to integrate conventional & nonconventional
may present some disagreements in regard to safety, at this point negotiation can be
utilized.
7. Define ethical theories, ethical principles, and values.

1. Ethical theories are general frameworks/rules/principles that provide a foundation for
judgments or courses of action. Two big ethical theories exist, teleologic or utilitarian
theory which applies to consequences of actions, and deontological or formalist theory
which applies to perceived duty.
