Week 4 Discussion: Designs - A Plan to Study for the Truth
Like any other research, nursing research is aimed at objectively studying a problem
and recommending the appropriate solutions to address it. Qualitative and Quantitative
research are two research methods available to researchers and either of them is chosen
depending on the researcher’s research question, the underlying philosophy of the research,
and his/her preference and skills. After completing the readings and the lesson for this week, I
understood that qualitative and quantitative research are different firstly because while
qualitative research seeks to answer the questions concerning how and why people behave
the way they do, quantitative research seeks to explain phenomena by collecting numerical
data then analyses it using mathematical methods such as statistics. Secondly, qualitative
research generates “textual data” which is non-numerical), while on the other hand,
quantitative research produces “numerical data” (Miller, 2010).
The study design that I found interesting is the qualitative research design. According
to the lessons, it is considered to be particularly suitable for exploratory research and in most
cases, it is used to discover and gain in-depth understanding of individual experiences,
opinions, trends, thoughts, or basically to dig deeper into problems at hand. I believe that the
qualitative research design can help in the study of nursing problems because the data
collection toolkit used is versatile and it employs the use of both semi-structured and
unstructured techniques (Miller, 2010). Additionally, it uses data collection methods which
are easy to implement yet they are effective, such as group discussions (focus groups),
individual interviews, and behavioural observations.
The clinical nursing priority problem that I identified in week 3 is “Among adults in
the Emergency Department that are in pain, would a registered nurse-initiated STAT analgesic
orders be more effective than waiting for physician analgesic orders in reducing pain among
