Mortality means it kills you

Morbidity means it changes you or causes disease but doesn’t kill you.

Intrapartum- during or labor

Postpartum- Is the first 6 weeks after delivery.

The role of the professional nurse was to help the Dr. in the twentieth century Forceps helped with
difficult births. The development of forceps to facilitate difficult births by physicians was a strong factor
in the decrease of home births and increase of hospital births. With the shift toward hospital births, the
numbers increased. The shift to hospital births decreased the amount of parental-infant contact.
Puerperal sepsis has been a known problem for generations. In the late nineteenth century, Semmel
weis discovered how it could be prevented.

The nurse is teaching a parenting class to new parents characteristics of a healthy family. Adults agree
on the majority of basic parenting principles. Adults in a healthy family communicate with each other,
so there is minimal discord in areas such as discipline and sleep schedules. Healthy families remain
flexible in their role assignments. Members of a healthy family accept assistance without feeling guilty.
Healthy families can tolerate irregular sleep and meal schedules, which are common during the months
after childbirth. Teach a primipara mother Family dynamics will change with the birth of an infant.

LDR is a labor delivery and recovery room.

LDRP is a labor delivery recovery and a postpartum room. An advantage to labor, birth, recovery, and
postpartum (LDRP) rooms is that it encouraged the mother’s support system to stay until discharge.

As research began to identify the benefits of early extended parent-infant contact, parents began to
insist that the infant remain with them. This gradually developed into the practice of rooming-in and
finally to family-centered maternity care.

The nurse has to do an assessment teaching and give care. Culturally Inadequate prenatal care is the
major factor associated with low-birth-weight infants, who are less likely to survive.

Always remember you have two patients the Mother and the Fetus. Active Labor is like ICU one on one.
The patient is encouraged to have parent-infant contact. In the traditional hospital setting, the mother
may see the infant for only short feeding periods, and the infant is cared for in a separate nursery.

Antepartum Homecare- This is for a patient at high risk, or if they have high blood pressure, or preterm
labor. The combination of narcotics and scopolamine produced heavy sedation and disorientation. The
new mother was not fully awake and oriented for several hours post birth. This also caused, twilight

, sleep which led to maternal confusion, disorientation, and heavy sedation and thus affected the
mother’s level of consciousness.

Late preterm births (34 to 36 completed weeks of gestation) have more health complications and higher
death rates than infants born at term because the babies are immature. Infants born at 34 to 36 weeks
may not have mature lungs and may need assistance with ventilation after birth.

Which method would not be used by hospitals to control costs during perinatal health care for
prospective birth management? Allowing a postpartum client to go home within 12 hours of birth is
not within the standard of care and, as such, may lead to potential problems in the postpartum
period. Typical LOS post birth is 24 to 48 hours.

The Grantly Dick-Read method focuses on the use of maternal breathing exercises to gain control over
pain by overcoming fear. This method promotes the use of non-pharmacologic methods to control labor
pain.

What is therapeutic communication as a maternal nurse? It is focused purposeful and goal-directed.
Need good intrapersonal skills and great teaching. Communication techniques- are Paraphrasing-
Reflection- Silence-Pinpointing, and do not give false assurance. When teaching the nurse should
motivate the family with praise and positive feedback to ensure learning in a family situation.
Pinpointing is calling attention to differences or inconsistencies in statements. Directing is using
nonverbal responses or succinct comments to encourage the person to continue. Paraphrasing is
restating in words other than those used by the woman what she seems to express; it is a form of
clarification.

Summarizing- is to review the information that was discussed.

Nurses are now responsible for various independent functions, including teaching, counseling, and
intervening in nonmedical problems. A newly pregnant patient should be taught the importance of
early and consistent prenatal care reduces pregnancy complications and allows for the identification of
problems.

The historic evolution of maternity care, used which treatment options? Training of granny midwives
was done by apprenticeship as opposed to formal medical school training. With the advent of usage of
hygienic practices, improved health outcomes were seen with regard to a decrease in sepsis. New
equipment such as forceps enabled easier birth.

Free-standing birth centers were to provide care for low-risk women during pregnancy, birth, and
postpartum. Clients who are at low risk and desire a safe, homelike birth used birthing centers, The new
mother may return to the birth center for postpartum follow-up care, breastfeeding assistance, and
family planning information for 6 weeks postpartum.

When teaching a mother, the nurse should watch the client’s correct performance of the procedure
under the nurse’s supervision is the best proof of her ability.
