Week 2: Search for Literature and Levels of
Evidence
Reflect on your practice, and identify a significant nursing clinical issue or change
project that you would like to search for evidence in online sources. Formulate
searchable, clinical questions in the PICO(T) format for your nursing clinical issue.
1. Next, review the guidelines for the PICOT Assignment due Week 3. Use your
PICOT elements to search for one report of a single, original study that has been
published within the last 5 years from the CCN Library that is relevant to your nursing
clinical issue.
2. Briefly describe how it is relevant to your nursing clinical issue. Remember to
give a complete reference to the study.
In the healthcare field there are many clinical issues or practices that could be changed
to benefit the nurses, physicians and patients. Working in the Emergency Department, I
have come to the realization of how important it is to address a patients pain needs
immediately. Pain is always what the patient says it is, so if the patient is experiencing
pain and you relieve it as quick as possible, reviews for the emergency department will
increase. When a person believes his/her pain is being ignored or not probably
addressed, this will reflect in patient satisfactory scores.
PICOT Question:
Adults in the Emergency Department that present with pain, how would RN initiated
STAT analgesic orders compare to waiting for physician analgesic orders, help
reduce patient pain and improve patient satisfaction scores in the Emergency
Department?
P- Adults in the Emergency Department experiencing pain
I-RN initiated STAT analgesics orders
C- Waiting for physician assessment and analgesic orders
O-Reduce pain and improve patient satisfaction scares in the Emergency Department
T- N/A
"Research by its nature is systemic and rigorous; it is about disciplined search for truth.
"Systematic" implies that decisions are carefully considered, options weighed and a
rational basis documented to support choices that are made" (Houser, 2018, pg. 32).
After searching the CCN Library, I came across an article titled, Evaluating a medical
directive for nurse-initiated analgesia in the Emergency Department, which discusses
how pain is often the number one reason that patients present to the Emergency
