Attend Howard University. Professor at a couple large universities, and one that would not hesitate to coach me when needed. Mentored me throughout my BSN, MSN, and DNP. NETWORK MEMBER 2 Name: Pauline Esoga Title: Nurse Manager and a Lawyer Organization: Howard County General Hospital Academic or Professional: Professional and Academic 2 Academic and professional success plan Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse: Notes: Pauline is a Nurse Manager for inpatient observation unit. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience in health care from OB, Med-surg, Ortho and now medical observation. Pauline did not hesitate to see my determination in all I do when I was privilege to meet her 2 years ago, working for the same organization I am with. He is not only the medical director as listed above but also owns his own personal practice. He is also well known at Walden University as a Preceptor, winning an award a couple years ago. Dr. Kamara is willing to serve as my preceptor throughout my months at Walden. I am fortunate to work alongside not only seasoned bedside nurses but also providers. Week 2 | Part 2: Academic Resources and Strategies Academic Resource/Strategy 1 Name: Dr. Jonathan Michael Rose carries a Dr. of Engineering and employed by 3 M company which is based in Minnesota. He has been with this organization for over 20 years and a friend for longer, who has mentored me through Nursing school, Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate. He has also been a Professor with a couple different online Universities for over 10 years. Academically, I believe he is strong enough to guide me through with processes, opportunities to review assignments and or papers, and provide direction needed for the development of those to reach to the highest standard needed. Dr. Rose gained his degree from Howard University thirty plus years ago. As a mentor / coach, Dr. Rose has and continues to devote time to our mentoring relationship during which time we interact often via the phone as he is based in Minnesota, and I am in Maryland. I can reach out to him via email, text messages, or phone calls. I continue to keep him informed of my academic progress, successes, challenges, other concerns, ideas or experiences 5 Academic and professional success plan that I have with him. I believe I have been able to gain his trust and confidence over the years reason why he continues to assist when needed. Ethically and collegially, I value his time, professional and personal communications, while also engaging in activities that support the vision and mission of Walden University. ACADEMIC RESOURCE/STRATEGY 2 Name: Pauline Esoga, is a Lawyer and currently a practicing Registered Nurse Manager at Howard County General Hospital Observation Unit. Pauline took me under her wing when I joined the team at Howard over two years ago. Coincidentally, she is also from West African which I believe aided with us connecting so easily. She has been a nurse here in the United States for over 25 years, prior to that she was a nurse in her hometown Nigeria. Shortly after our meeting, she mentioned that she started off her career being a Lawyer but shortly thereafter, had a family medical situation that was an eye opener for her, and changed her trend of thoughts which directed her to going into health care. Her experience in the health care field range from Medical Surgical, to Orthopedic, and now Medical Observation which she enjoys and gains great pleasure in managing. In her down time, she teaches at the Howard Community College, which also gave me the encouragement to spread my wings in becoming an Adjunct Professor with the Nursing department. Over the past few months, I have been able to ask Pauline questions, raise awareness relating to real-world work life balance, as well as continue to gain a wealth of knowledge from her and in our surrounding. 6 Academic and professional success plan Academic Resource/Strategy 3 Name: Dr. Umaru Kamara is a Psychiatrist not only for QCI Behavior Health, but also the President and owner of the Axios Behavior Health, Psychiatrist of EAP Program / Behavior Wellness, and a preceptor with the College of Health Sciences, Walden University. Dr. Kamara and I met, through a friend during my preparation for heading on a mission to Freetown, Sierra Leone working with Rape Victims few months ago. He did not just embrace the project I was about to embark on but was also willing to assist which was greatly appreciated. Dr. Kamara has years of experience under his belt working with psychiatric mental health patients / clients in all mentioned areas above, including owning his own practice. Dr. Kamara has agreed to mentor me and offer that I complete clinical hours with him in conjunction with my place of work Howard County General Hospital. Professional Resource/Strategy 1 Name: Howard County General Hospital (HCGH): Inpatient and Emergency Room Psychiatric psychiatrist and Nurse Practitioners who affiliates with John Hopkins Medicine. I would have the opportunity to work alongside psychiatrist that have a wealth of knowledge and years of experience which would serve as great resource to me during and after this post master’s Certification Program. I plan to embrace every opportunity given to me during this time in order to achieve all that I can to be the best practitioner I can to my patients. Faculty members at Hopkins undertake not only teaching in the classrooms but also research, and service roles in order to be able to carry out the academic work in their respective departments. The vision of American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) core values are” empowerment, inclusivity, integrity, collegiality, innovation, transparency, and stewardship which is guided by a strategic direction of Board of Directors. As a member of this organization for the last 5 years, I am aware of the resources offered for Advance Practice Nurses. It provides not only professional advancement, but also provides quality psychiatric-mental health nursing continuing education programs, a wealth of resources for PMH nurses that are established, emerging and prospective candidates within a community of dynamic collaboration (APNA, 2019). APNA is an accredited provider of continuing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission of Accreditation, which offers a variety of programs including but not limited to The APNA Annual Conference which brings together the largest gathering of PMH nurses in the United States, the APNA Annual Clinical Psychopharmacology Institute which targets PMH nurses on drug therapies, and also the APNA eLearning Center which augments APNA’s live national and chapter level activities. Some of the online programs offered are psychopharmacology, smoking cessation, and suicidality. Most of these programs are accessible freely to its members, or at a very low cost. Professional Resource/Strategy 3 Name: Walden University Resources: writing center, online library, career center, and advisor. Academic sources also called scholarly sources are available from the above listed departments 8 Academic and professional success plan of the university. Resources include but not limited to books, academic journal articles, and published expert reports. Content of the academic sources have already been peer-reviewed, which means that it has been reviewed by field experts on its topic for accuracy and quality before being published for public use (Walden University, 2019). I can seek information relating to the course from not only the professor but also from the academic advisors that is assigned to me as a student at the beginning of the semester. The class café is another open section online, that I can access for general questions which sometimes other students would also be curious about and find answers from other colleagues. Resources are available for me and all other students to access which helps me through the entirety of my program. Class café is also used to introduce each other including the professor. This opens the door to being energized, participating without fear, producing stellar work, and discuss career goals or prospects. Professors make themselves available to us earlier on in the class and offers times that they are available to us via email, or phone calls. Most professors have tons to offer beyond the lessons in class, as well as individual career advice if needed. Its our responsibility to embrace resources being offered to us by our professors in and outside the classroom, and to use these to our advantage. LinkedIn is a professional site that encourages professionals to meet and share ideas as well as evidence-based programs. Being able to meet colleagues from Walden University via LinkedIn is also something that I am happy to take advantage of during this program. Even with years passed, I continue to stay in touch with professors that I had in my Associate in Nursing program. These are individuals that made an impact on my education path as well as career postcollege. I am excited to stay in touch with not only those professors but also students that I was
