I. Rationale:
The (Name of Agency) is continuously upgrading its ways in dealing
with the clientele to improve the company’s strength and personnel
capabilities as well as keeping a positive image to the community. With the
support of fresh ideas and a collaborative effort, the (Name of Office Primary
Responsible) is making the most of its resources in helping reach the
company’s ideals through conducting series of webinar to enhance
personnel’s skills and competencies.
This webinar/workshop aims at teaching participants what it takes to
improve their techniques to elevate the quality of documentation especially
on important events that take place in jails. It is designed to provide
personnel with everything they need to improve their knowledge and skills in
writing for publishing news pieces and to take this competency to the next
level. Having this skill is a great advantage both in the field of correction and
their personal life.
II. Learning Objectives
At the end of the one-day webinar/workshop, participants from the
(name of agency) are expected to improve their skills in writing newsletter
articles and understand its importance in communicating effectively with the
readers when combined with their photography skills.
Specifically, at the end of the course, the participants are expected to:
1. Understand the value of writing interesting stories for the promotion of
publicizing company’s activities;
2. Get a better understanding of how to write quality newsletter articles;
3. Identify the characteristics of the inverted pyramid for presenting
news;
4. Apply inverted pyramid method to write a news story;
5. Identify the key facts of a news story: who, what, where, when, why
and how; for a lede;
6. Learn how to create news story captions, headlines, and titles;
7. Develop techniques on how to spot interesting stories and other
sources of news in jail; and
8. Identify the necessary information a management team should have
on hand in case a press release is required or whenever the situation
calls for it.
, III. Training Overview
A. Introduction to Newsletter Article Writing
Participants will be introduced to the inverted pyramid style of writing.
Reporting and writing the news is a way of informing citizens about events
that occurred when they were not present to witness them. Throughout the
course of a day, everyone only sees a small portion of the events that are
taking place in that particular location, and a personnel’s job is to summarize
the significant events that takes place within a company. To begin, jail
officers will carefully, accurately, and fairly collect information. They will then
use this data to write stories that are easily understood by the general
public. Through this, they will be expected to depend on a format known as
the inverted pyramid, which has proven to be a successful method of
communicating news stories. A newsworthy piece of information is placed at
the top of the inverted pyramid, beginning with a "lede." The rest of the
items are then arranged in descending order of priority. Participants who
learn this method will be able to work more quickly and efficiently.
B. News: Researching, Interviewing, Reporting and Writing
A lesson that gets to the heart of reporting and writing an article, and
takes the participants through all of the steps involved in accomplishing this
goal. Learning activities that will help participants study and understand how
the best writers craft their stories. As the need for a press release arises or
as circumstances dictate, participants will gain an understanding of what
information a management team should have on hand at all times.
C. Precise Writing
Educate participants on how to select exact and accurate nouns,
adjectives, and verbs in order to produce engaging writing.
D. News/Article Writing as an effective tool of communication / Workshop
Participants are expected to create their own stories by putting all of
the material they have learned in this webinar.
IV. Course description
It is intended that participants leave this seminar/workshop with a
better understanding of how to appropriately document various activities
and services offered by their company. They will also learn how to improve
their writing skills and expertise in order to produce quality news articles.
Participants will receive understanding on how to write news stories, press
releases, titles, headlines, and photo captions, as well as how to generate
