BTE2601 marked Assignment 3
BTE2601 marked Assignment 3. 1.1. I do agree with this statement. When teaching learners a new concept, you need to understand how to convey the message in a way for them to also understand it. For example: teaching a Grade R how to do addition. You have to start explaining on their level by using concrete objects before transitioning to abstract sums. One needs to have knowledge of the curriculum. To be able to teach effectively and ensure the learners fulfil the requirements needed to progress, the educator has to know what is expected from them and the learners. The curriculum needs to be used as a guide for each lesson. The educator needs to understand their students. Not all learners acquire knowledge the same way. Some might have barriers to learning. The educator needs to be aware of this and be able to ensure each learner understands. You need to adapt to the needs in the class. Content knowledge is also imperative. For me to be able to teach, I need to fully understand what I am teaching. If I do not understand the concepts, then the learners will also not understand and there will be a gap in their learning. I need to know the social/cultural contexts I find myself in as well as what I have available to aid my teaching process. I need to apply this to my lessons to make learning effective for all learners – whether it be incorporating individual attention or more group based tasks. 1.2. Applying learning theories in the classroom benefits the students in terms of how they learn. As the educator I need to be able to adapt to the needs of my learners. Understanding learning theories and the different ways students acquire knowledge will allow to adapt my teaching style accordingly. This gives each child a fair opportunity to succeed at school. Understanding these theories also allows me to implement the curriculum in the most effective way. Taking into account that the curriculum is outcome based, one can assume that teaching in a way that benefits each learner’s style will yield the best result. Let’s use the Multiple Intelligences theory by Howard Gardner as an example. This theory states that learners have varied intelligences which tell us about their strengths in certain learning areas. As an educator I need to be able to identify the strengths of my learners and then need to plan and execute my lesson in a way that engages each learner. For example: a child with the Logical-mathematical intelligence will benefit from the inclusion of numbers, critical thinking, problem solving and calculations. This needs to be taken into account during lesson planning and implementation. 1.3. Online reading question 1.4. Perform pedagogical duties – an educator needs to be able to care for their learners in all their needs in school. This includes dealing with complex situations that could occur outside of the school environment, yet symptoms of that present itself in the class.
