Personal philosophy of nursing
Caring and Empathy my philosophy of nursing
Just as a person’s personal philosophy of life guides them with their daily life, having a personal
philosophy of nursing help to guide a nurse to carry out their nursing tasked with clarity and
focus and also be able to handle challenges along their nursing career. Since there is great
diversity in the age, gender, race and cultural differences in patient population, the nurse’s
personal philosophy of nursing plays a big role in guiding the nurse to provide non-biased care to
all of these patients.
In my opinion, every nurse should possess the ability to be caring and empathetic. This means
that beyond taking care of patient’s physical needs such as providing their medication, assessing
them when need be, the nurse needs to also pay attention to the patient’s emotional needs. Even
though every sick individual in the hospital is a patient, they all have different types of needs.
Some patients need someone who can understand how they feel about their illness by spending
time with them and listening to what they have to say. The nurse’s job is not only limited to
patient’s medical condition but also to be there for them to care and show empathy as they fight
to get well.
Choice of nursing
I studied Accounting and Business management at the university of Yaoundé Cameroon in West
Africa. I work as an accountant with one of the financial institutions in Cameroon for about six
years then I relocated to the United States. In the United States, I tried applying for an
accounting job but I could not find a job. One of my friends told me that if I did nursing I would
get a job easily. Just the thought converting from accounting to nursing did not seem possible to
me. Therefore, I rejected the idea of becoming a nurse.

, About three months later after rejecting the idea of becoming a nurse, I lost one of my uncles
whom I love so much to cardiac arrest. The doctors said he had uncontrolled blood sugar and
blood pressure. I thought to myself that if I had the nursing knowledge I would have been able to
know how to take care of my uncle and my uncle might have still been alive. For this reason, I
decide to start my nursing career so that I will have the knowledge to help the sick population
and prevents what happened to my uncle from happening to someone else
Even though, my uncle’s death is my primary reason for choosing nursing, the relationship that I
create with /patient/family is very important because it allows for one on one interaction with the
patient and I am able to take care of them with care and compassion while giving them the
education needed to take care of themselves.
Essence of nursing
The core of nursing should primarily gear towards providing individualized nursing service to
patients based on the type of population we are dealing with. The roots of nursing are firmly
anchored in service to others: individuals, groups, and communities. (Killeen, M. L, & Saewert,
K.J., 2007,p.51). As nurses, we need to have the understanding that even though every sick
person in the hospital is a patient, but they all have different needs and our attention and care
should go towards the patient as a person that also has emotional needs and not just about the
medications administration and nursing interventions. Nursing assessment and interventions will
be incomplete with the aspect of caregiving and empathy. Showing care and empathy to patients
helps in the healing process.
