Leadership Style Self-Analysis

Introduction

Leadership style is the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans,

and motivating people. As seen by the employees, it includes the total pattern of explicit and

implicit actions performed by their leader. (Newstrom, Davis, 1993). In this paper, I will address

the results of two leadership surveys and what I have discovered in relation to my leadership

style, strengths as a leader and areas for improvement.

Leaderships Survey Results

I took two leadership surveys, attached as appendix A and B, from the websites Big Dog

and Little Dog Performance Juxtaposition and Mindtools. I will discuss my results from the

surveys.

Leadership Style Survey

This survey consists of thirty questions to answer about my leadership style beliefs. The

answer is a number from 1 (almost never) to 5 (almost always true). These numbers were then

placed in a column based on the type of leadership style that question pertained to. This survey

gave me a score of 23 for autocratic style and a score of 37 in both democratic and delegative

styles of leadership. I have attached this survey as Appendix A.

What’s Your Leadership Style?

This survey involves answering twelve questions with a, b, or c based on how you would

behave in reality, not how you should behave. The survey then calculates a total and that total

tells you what style of leadership category you fall into. The options are authoritarian,

democratic or delegating. I scored a 25 on this survey which placed me in the category of a

democratic or participative style of leadership. I have attached this survey as Appendix B.

My Leadership Style Summary

I have learned that my leadership style primarily based on a democratic or participative

style. The definition of this style of leadership is distributing responsibility among membership,

empowering group members, and aiding the groups’ decision-making process. (Gastil, 1994).

The trademarks of this style are that everyone is encouraged to participate freely, without

judgement and for the leader to take advantage of the diversity of the team.

Leadership Strengths

I set goals, guide team discussions, and make the final decision. I know that my team

have valuable insights and input and because of that, I consult them actively. According to the

survey, “What’s your leadership style” (2020), I tend to set parameters for the work and make the

final decisions, but actively involve my team members in all processes. This builds trust and

commitment between myself my team. It will make members feel valued, engaged, improves

job satisfaction and encourages creativity. This can build a strong team based on mutual respect

and honesty.

Leadership Weaknesses

This style may not be the best style in high pressure situations or where a quick decision

is necessary. It requires time and a level of conflict resolution to hear multiple opinions and

work with all people involved. A consensus can take time and may require a leader to use the

autocratic leadership style, even briefly. This style may also make the group members doubt

their leaders’ abilities if they don’t take control of situations.

Conclusion

I feel that the democratic leadership style serves me the best for my personality, but I am

able to see the need to incorporate aspects of other styles to strengthen my leadership abilities.
