Nursing informatics has developed into a valuable role for healthcare organizations with
a dependence on technology to take care of patients, including using electronic health records
(EHR). The ability to connect technology with the nursing profession is considered nursing
informatics. The nurse informaticist is someone who has expertise in healthcare and informatics,
which gives them the unique ability to synergized healthcare delivery and information
technology (Cummins et al., 2016). This specialty will ensure there is ready access to pertinent
information about the patient for all healthcare team members.
Nursing Informaticists and Other Health Care Organizations
Patients’ medical records used to be in all others of the hospital and there were no records
from outside facilities. When the healthcare team needed to obtain outside records, it could take
days for the information to arrive. The evolution of the electronic medical record (EMR) systems
changed all that. The technology allows hospitals to easily access the patient’s medical record
instantaneously and can obtain outside records in minutes. The nurse informaticist can play a
valuable role in ensuring facilitating the sharing of the medical record to improve and expedite
patient care. What’s more, the information can be shared for education or research purposes,
which can enhance patient care. The shared information improves clinical decisions and leads to
decrease inappropriate medical treatment (Campanella et al., 2015). This will lead to positive
outcomes for patients while improving the patient experience. As well, the EMR allows
healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care at any time and place (Vos et al., 2020).
Impact of Full Nurse Engagement in Health Care Technology
There is a direct impact on patients when a nurse is engaged in healthcare technology.
Prior to the EMR system, the provider had to present in order to write orders or the nurse would
