Proposal for Nursing Informatics in Health Care
, NURSING INFORMATICS
Today’s health care needs of organizations and individuals greatly rely on technology
and consolidation of information. In order to keep up with the ever-expanding data available, a
nurse informaticist is needed in most healthcare organizations to improve patient safety and
overall health outcomes. The nurse informaticist can also help the health organization staff by
creating a more efficient workflow and less individualized organization by helping their
electronic medical records (EMR) system work better. This proposal will focus on what the
nurse informaticist does and why he or she is needed. It will also touch on how other health
organizations have successfully implemented this position and what impact it had on their
patients and staff.
Nursing Informatics and the Nurse Informaticist
In order to understand how nurse informaticists can help health care organizations, a
standard definition had to be coined. Cummins et.al.(2016) stated “The Nursing Informatics
Scope and Standards of Practice by the American Nurses Association defines nursing informatics
as ‘the specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences
to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in
nursing practice’ ”(p. 267).
Given that definition, it is easier to understand what a nurse informaticist does. He or she
will be the instrument to help the computers help people in today’s world. Chauvette (2016)
reminds us that even Florence Nightingale was actually a trailblazer in this field before
computers, however. She was able to process the information that came into her regarding her
observations of the British Soldiers in Crimea and analyze it to compile reports. I assume these
enabled other nurses in war time to read these reports and learn best practices.
