SOPHIA 202 Week 4 Journal Critical Reading & Writing (2) Keep in mind that there are no right or wrong answers. You will be assessed on the depth of your reflection, so take this opportunity to inspire personal thought and ideas. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………… Reflecting on your reading and writing Directions: Review Sections 4.3 – 4.6 in your text and think back to your early experiences with reading and writing. Then, respond thoroughly and honestly to each prompt. 1. What made reading fun for you in the past? What made it a chore? Describe any strategies that you use or read about in Sections 4.3 or 4.4 that you would like to use to help you become a more critical reader. Reading has never been my cup of tea, but I find that when I am reading about something that I have a passion or interest for, it is much more enjoyable. I’ve also found that reading small sections at a time and processing the information before moving onto the next… is less painful for me. Reading becomes a chore for me when I have to read something for school “just because”, but have no application to apply what I’ve read when finished. Reading an entire book and writing a paper on it, has never been my strong suit. I find that it is also a chore when I am assigned a chapter to read, but the information I need is maybe 25% of that reading material. Something I would like to try after reading sections 4.3 – 4.6 is more exploring. I tend to just jump into the material and pull as much from it as I can, as quickly as I can. I think that if I took the time to actually explore before doing a closer reading. 2. For some students, expressing their thoughts in writing comes naturally and easily. For other students “writer’s block” is a regular occurrence, and they find it difficult to articulate their thoughts. To what degree do you enjoy or dislike writing? Describe any strategies that you use or read about in Sections 4.5 and 4.6 that you would like to use to help you become a more critical writer. Honestly, it depends on my head space and my mood. What I am writing about is a huge factor in my enjoyment level. I feel like I either nail it or struggle with the entire paper, but it always comes back to me either feeling like I didn’t have enough knowledge of the topic to begin with, or I am not in a good space to think freely and clearly. A strategy I would like to use in the future with my writing is tethering my use first - precision by being focused and direct with my words. I also think that writing a skeleton would benefit me as I can sometimes get off topic and lose sight of the purpose for my paper. By now you’ve likely recognized how important reading and writing are in the college setting. You are tasked with reading and writing with every assignment that you complete. However, there’s more to learning than just reading and writing. Let’s take a step back and look at the bigger picture as we consider ways to become an overall better student. Look over the 18 Ideas for Becoming a Master Student. Some of these will seem to be common sense, while others might help you become a more intentional learner. 3. Identify one idea that you employ currently and describe how you put this idea into practice. I loved idea #4 “Become a questioner. Engage yourself in lectures and discussions by asking questions. If you don’t ask questions, you will probably not discover what you do and do not know.” I have become quite okay with being the person in the room that asks a ton of questions. I learned in my career years ago, that if I didn’t ask, I would never know what I don’t know! More often than not, it ended up being a common question amongst the class too. So I was not the only one that had the question. I often ask a ton of questions when troubleshooting an issue on the job. I find that the more questions I ask, the more information I have to do my job well and solve the problem. 4. Identify one idea that you can begin to implement in future courses to enhance your learning experience. Explain why you chose this idea. Idea #12: Seek to find the key concept of the course during the first couple of class meetings. For example, in a biology course, try explaining what biology is in your own words. Then relate that definition to each segment of what you learn afterward. Fundamental ideas are the basis for all others. I chose this idea because I think that it would give an incredible around of insight into the class, and possibly engage my attention even more than it would have otherwise. I have never thought to seek out the key concept of a class in the beginning of it. Sometimes I do not discover the key concepts or points until near the end. I am excited to give this idea a try!

Reflecting on your reading and writing

Directions: Review Sections 4.3 – 4.6 in your text and think back to your early experiences with
reading and writing. Then, respond thoroughly and honestly to each prompt.

1. What made reading fun for you in the past? What made it a chore? Describe any strategies
that you use or read about in Sections 4.3 or 4.4 that you would like to use to help you
become a more critical reader.

Reading has never been my cup of tea, but I find that when I am reading about something that I
have a passion or interest for, it is much more enjoyable. I’ve also found that reading small
sections at a time and processing the information before moving onto the next… is less painful
for me. Reading becomes a chore for me when I have to read something for school “just
because”, but have no application to apply what I’ve read when finished. Reading an entire book
and writing a paper on it, has never been my strong suit. I find that it is also a chore when I am
assigned a chapter to read, but the information I need is maybe 25% of that reading material.

Something I would like to try after reading sections 4.3 – 4.6 is more exploring. I tend to just
jump into the material and pull as much from it as I can, as quickly as I can. I think that if I took
the time to actually explore before doing a closer reading.

2. For some students, expressing their thoughts in writing comes naturally and easily. For other
students “writer’s block” is a regular occurrence, and they find it difficult to articulate their
thoughts. To what degree do you enjoy or dislike writing? Describe any strategies that you
use or read about in Sections 4.5 and 4.6 that you would like to use to help you become a
more critical writer.

Honestly, it depends on my head space and my mood. What I am writing about is a huge factor
in my enjoyment level. I feel like I either nail it or struggle with the entire paper, but it always
comes back to me either feeling like I didn’t have enough knowledge of the topic to begin with,
or I am not in a good space to think freely and clearly.
