What do you see as the most pressing ethical issue in healthcare today? Tell us why you see
this issue as particularly compelling from an ethical perspective.
The controversy around abortion in the U.S. healthcare system is an important & pressing
ethical issue. This relevant ethical dilemma is actively creating turmoil in the healthcare sector &
pursued by many to have laws revised. This issue is difficult because it can restrict or dem& that
a doctor perform a duty that they do not believe is ethical. A question to ask concerning this topic
is, “Is it ethical for a doctor to make a decision based on their own personal set of ethics?”
Abortion was legalized for the first time in Roe vs. Wade in 1973 & as of 2005, “…there
have been more than 47 million abortions”[ CITATION Geo12 \l 1033 ] This topic is at the
forefront of many political debates & can divide many individuals in their separate beliefs about
the future of healthcare & how these systems should work. Ethical, moral & religious beliefs are
concerned when it comes to this topic making it compelling & emotional for many who have an
opinion on the matter. I see this as being particularly compelling because there are significant
consequences in the decisions that are made pertaining to this issue, particularly in court. As
well, many other ethical decisions like how to teach & address this issue in schools effects the
outcome of other rulings to do with abortion & abortion rates in general.
This is not simply an issue that arises from human nature but from culture. The ethical
decisions that cultures make have a lasting effect on abortion issues in healthcare. It is difficult to
agree even, on what constitutes the beginning of life which makes it hard to determine the ethical
implications of abortion at different periods of pregnancy. The rights of an unborn fetus have not
been determined & are subject to various opinions. I think ultimately who decides is a
compelling issue concerning abortion. Opinions are numerous & the fact that those with no
medical training can make a difference in who decides is telling of the fact that this issue will
continue to be hotly debated.
