Case Recommendation for Margie Whitson
Prepared by David Jamison, MHA, Ethics Committee Chairman at Marion General Hospital
Identification
Margie Whitson is a 95 year old patient who is being kept alive with a pacemaker. In the
past five years she has experienced a great deal of loss with the pass of her son and husband.
Margie believes that the only reason she is alive is due to the pace maker which is only
prolonging her existence. She feels that she should have the right to turn the pacemaker off and
end her life.
There is a moral dilemma present in this situation in which maintaining Margie’s life by
refusing to turn off the pacemaker is prolonging her pain and anguish. However, turning off the
pacemaker would violate professional ethics of the doctor and hospital. This situation is a
conflict between personal and professional ethics.
Understanding that professional ethics are the rules that apply to the behavior of a group
of individuals, such as in this case doctors; any member of this group is bound by these rules.
The doctors as well as hospital staff are mandated by these professional ethics to do no harm.
There is a moral issue at stake in this situation such that Margie’s personal morality which
defines her personal character is in conflict with the professional ethics system of the hospital
which guides how morals are applied. Within this framework, the hospital staff is bound by
ethics that point to standards or codes of behavior expected by the group to which the individual
belongs, i.e., professional ethics for doctors.
