Healthcare Reform (graded)
Based upon your learning in this course and your own personal and/or professional
experiences, what are the essential reforms that must occur in the U.S. healthcare system in
order to improve access, cost, and quality of care for all Americans?
Healthcare in the United States has many issues with regards to quality and delivery. While
strides have been made to correct many of the problems associated with healthcare, these
problems continue to persist. The largest problem with healthcare is that quality is completely
dependent upon cost. If a person lacks healthcare coverage (insurance) he or she is typically
subject to inadequate service and delays that can be dangerous. The system is the same within
public healthcare as well as in private healthcare.
These problems highlight significant underlying issues in the healthcare system in which
concepts and arguments for socialized medicine and for-profit healthcare seem to clash.
Currently, the healthcare system tries to compensate for these issues by providing some levels of
free healthcare or low cost but the problem of quality persists despite these efforts. With
healthcare reform underway there is significant change looming in the future for all aspects of
healthcare, however there is still a large degree of resistance that could change the healthcare
status when the current administration exits office.
Personally, I believe that healthcare reform is needed in order to improve quality. However, I
believe that these reforms could have been achieved through less drastic measures. There are
already a variety of public health institutions available that could have been used without
reinventing the system.
Healthcare War Rooms (graded)
What is a healthcare war room? As CEO of your own healthcare facility, how would you go
about creating your own war room, and how would you utilize this place in the leadership
of your facility?
According to Pozgar (2011). “The healthcare war room is a designated place, a room where
healthcare professionals meet to brainstorm ways to improve the quality of patient care. The
healthcare war room is not just about doing the right thing, but about doing the right thing well.”
As a CEO of a healthcare facility I would create a war room but it would be required to meet ofte
(once a month) in order to check progress and set goals. The point of the War Room is to have a
strategic think-tank where leaders within the facility can create goals. For this reason, I would
desire that the war-room meet often enough to monitor objectives and to see where changes need
to be made.
The war room should also be constructed in a manner which allows for open discussion and
strategy creation. This would mean that the war room should be designed with less of a hierarchy
and more of a democratic or team format. In this way, concepts can be brought to the table and
considered for goals.
