, Executive Summary
The measurement of outcomes is a method of appraising the quality of healthcare and is
now used to determine suitability of reimbursement for care rendered. Empirical outcomes are
one of the five components utilized by the Magnet Model that can be the proof needed to justify
processes and structures in place and their efficacy. This executive summary will outline
Empirical Outcomes identified through the Magnet Survey report and the benefits experienced at
Saint Louis Medical Center (SLMC) as a result of the utilization of the Magnet Model.
Magnet Recognition and Empirical Outcomes
As a way to ensure healthcare dollars are spent wisely The Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS) developed a Value-Based Purchasing Plan (VBP). Through this plan
reimbursement is tied to the quality of healthcare. This allow facilities like SLMC to not only
carry the coveted Magnet status, symbolizing the highest quality of care, but also to improve
care, improve patient outcomes and improve nurse job satisfaction as well (Woten & Mennella,
2016). When it comes to reimbursement through the VBP the largest component determining the
amount hospitals will receive is the Total Performance Score (TPS) within this score outcomes
account for 40% of the TPS for reimbursement for hospitals. Some outcome measures hospitals
can work towards for reimbursement are Acute Myocardial Infarction mortality measure (AMI),
Heart Failure (HF), and pneumonia; readmission measures for knee/hip replacements, AMI, HF
and pneumonia; Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) rates which include central line-associated
blood steam infections (CLABSIs) (Woten & Mennella, 2016). While address these critical
measures, facilities are reducing the rates of these complications, reducing mortality and costs,
improve care and patient outcomes.
According to Luzinski (2012), outcomes are defined as quantitative and qualitative data
demonstrating the impact of structure and process on the organization, patient, nursing workforce
