A1. Interview Techniques
Four interview techniques used for assessing the patient's social determinants in a
comprehensive health assessment would first begin with providing a quiet and private area with
no interruptions, so the patient could feel comfortable speaking to me freely. Second, would be to
introduce myself and ask for the patient's full name and how they would like to be addressed to

make a personal connection. Third, using a non-verbal approach such as observing body
language, facial expressions and using direct eye contact especially when discussing areas that
may be sensitive. Fourth, I would ask open-ended questions that will allow my patient to tell me
more information about them. Doing this would hopefully begin trust in the patient relationship
(Bickley, 2017).
A1a. Justification of Key Questions
Key questions used to assess each of the patients 5 determinants of health were:
1-Where do you live, do you feel safe there and how is the neighborhood? Patient’s response is
that he lives with his parents, yes, he feels safe and it is in a very good neighbor. This addresses
neighborhood and built environment and the purpose of the question are to analyze the family
and social support, condition of housing, and environmental conditions.
2-Do you work, full time or part time, are you able to pay your bills? His response was yes he
works as a full-time Firefighter/EMT and is able to pay for his vehicle, insurance, and other
personal bills without any problems and is able to save money. This addresses the economic
stability and education of the social determinants, the purpose of this question is to show support
of his stability as an individual and assesses his education in healthcare needs as an EMT. Also,
his efforts of schooling involved becoming a Firefighter/EMT for personal achievements.
3-Do you have health insurance, a primary care physician and when was the last time you had an
appointment with them? His response was yes, he has health insurance through work, has a
family doctor that he sees once a year unless needed for illnesses and the last visit was 6 months
ago. This addresses health and health care and economic stability determinants. The purpose of
this question is to identify if there are any barriers to healthcare.
