Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has been recognized as the best hospital in the nation for 2020-
2021 by U.S. News and World Report (“About Mayo Clinic”, 2021). Mayo Clinic’s mission and
values is to inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to
every patient through integrated clinical practice, education as well as research. The primary
value of Mayo is “The needs of the patient come first.” (“About Mayo Clinic”, 2021).
The microsystem level addresses day-to-day activities of clients, working together on a
regular basis to provide care. This smaller system produces quality, safety and cost outcomes at
the front line of care. The microsystem level is the linkage between vision of an organization and
the delivery of care, therefore acting as the “agent” for change within a macrosystem (Kosnik, et
al., 2003). The microsystem, the small, functional, front-line unit, is where the strategic plans
become operationalized. Ultimately, the outcomes of the macrosystem can be no better than the
microsystem (Kosnik, et al., 2003). Microsystem leaders address health care delivery goals by
working day-to-day with patients and other microsystem nurses, being able to adjust schedules
and ratios to better improve quality of care being provided. Action occurring at the micro-level
can transform social structures at the field level and help generate institutional change (Essen, et
al., 2019).
The role of the mesosystem is to be a link between microsystems to allow them to work
together. The mesosystem can be a link between the macrosystem and microsystem, assisting in
making information, policies, and goals understandable. Thus, allowing the microsystem to carry
out these mission and values. The mesosystem comes from the organizational and institutional
rules, norms, values, and cultural expectations. The system can be shaped by the individual
members and the sort of culture and climate created and supported by organizational leaders
