Week 1 Reflection
In Week 1, I learned that nursing theory is important for nurses and nurse
practitioners. As one of our classmates, Martha, has mentioned, they're like pillars that
create the foundation of nursing practice. Nursing theory can guide nurses to providing
care for patients with quality and improvement in outcomes. This is also why we have to
realize nursing is a practice profession, it is not just a verb, a doing of following doctors'
orders, but it includes intuition and decision-making from our judgments.
Understanding these concepts can help us prepare for our future role as nurse
practitioner because not only are we looking at clinical data and following orders, we
have to think critical and center care for the individual, while recognizing previous
actions and how it can be improved. I feel prepared for my new role as I constantly assess
my patients and try to interact with them to create a relationship and provide that unique
individual-centered care. I feel unprepared as I have so much more to learn and
experience, especially from my peers.
Week 2 Reflection
To achieve our weekly objectives, I usually start on the day I have off. I will look
over readings and topics and familiarize myself with the objectives. I will do my readings
that day and look over what the assignment/discussion is asking for. After that, whether I
am off or not, I will be thinking about how I will conduct my discussion,
paper/assignment throughout the week. I may or may not jot down ideas. When I am
ready to do my assignment, I will have thoughts and ideas in my head or paper, I may
even do a quick outline to help me with my writing. I value the amount of self-reflection I
have done this week. I am able to analyze bad situations I have been in and how I was

able to grow from them through experience, as I am self-reflecting now, I realize it is
important to do so on a daily basis for work and life in general. To further grow as a
future NP, I not only have to complete my weekly assignments, but getting involved in
discussions and reading other peers’ posts can help me grow and learn from them as well.
Week 3 Reflection
In week 3 I learned that concepts are the foundation of nursing theories. Concept
analysis is important to the development of these nursing theories. I was proud of myself,
as I was able to dissect and complete a concept analysis on a concept that is important to
nursing. I was able to delve in to the different antecedents, consequences, and attributes
of the concept of nursing competency. I was not only able to relate it to a useful nursing
theory by Benner, From Novice to Expert, but I was able to analyze and self-reflect
during this paper; determining which attributes were my strengths and which were my
weaknesses. I need growth in my professional knowledge and skills to be able to enhance
my competency, and practice on making self-reflection a daily and constant routine as
though it just happens naturally, is a skill I will need to continue developing to be able to
apply new concepts.
Week 4 Reflection
In Week 4, I realized that many nursing theories all interrelate with one another.
For example, the theory discussed by our classmate, Thuhanh, was based on the
behavioral system model. The theory states that we should determine the behavioral
pattern of a patient to develop a plan of care individualized to that patient. This relates to
the theories focusing on patient-centered care, or holistic care theories. As we determine
how different each patient’s and their case is, we will have to individualize our care for
