Week 1 Discussion Topic NR 393
This week we have learned about the history of Chamberlain University, Chamberlain College of
Nursing, and Deaconess School of Nursing. As you consider that history and the impact on the
present and future, please tell us about the history of the previous nursing school you attended.
If you are unable to find history information for your school, please profile the history of
another school of nursing in your geographic area.
I received my Associated Degree in Nursing at Middlesex County College in New Jersey. The
nursing program held there was originally called Charles E. Gregory School of nursing and they
originally worked with UMDNJ. In 2009, they became affiliated with Raritan Bay Medical Center
in Perth Amboy/Old Bridge and housed their classes at the Middlesex County College Campus in
Edison (Greater Media, 2006). Many of the original Charles E. Gregory instructors followed the
move of this school to Middlesex and educated those interested in becoming nurses.
The Middlesex County College website discusses that this program prepares nurses for entry-
level positions by prepping the students for the National Counsel Licensure Examination for
Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) during a standard two-year program. The Middlesex County
College also discusses their recognition, “It has been approved by the New Jersey State Board of
Nursing, the New Jersey Council of Presidents, and Accredited by the Accreditation Commission
for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN)” (Middlesex County College, 2019).
My grandmother had attended the Charles E. Gregory School of Nursing that eventually
transformed to the Middlesex County College of Nursing. She was one of the major factors that
made me what I am today. She made me laugh because she still had her old nursing text books
and would give them to me to help study though some of the procedures are different from
back then. Technology has changed since she had gone to school, from her looking up resources
in libraries to complete homework assignments to what I have to do to conduct my homework
assignments. Judd (2014) mentions “Technological advances through time have resulted in
interventions that earlier healthcare providers could not imagine, for example antibiotics,
insulin, ventilators, artificial hearts and limbs, organ transplants, intricate wound-care protocols,
anesthesia, effective pain management, and genetic engineering” and she would be absolutely
astounded by what kind of documentation and medication administration I utilize on a day to
day (Judd & Sitzman, pg. 3). She was a Manager of the Labor and Delivery Unit in Raritan Bay
Medical Center in Perth Amboy, which is the same hospital that I started my medical experience
in, and it is awesome to see nurses still working there that remember who she was.
