Week 7 Discussion Topic NR 393
You have completed your interview of a nurse who is making nursing history today. How will
that nurse's contributions and accomplishments impact your future professional nursing
practice? As you reflect on your own nursing practice, how are you contributing to nursing
history?
I enjoyed conducting this interview with my fellow nurse. I found out a lot about her and her
journey in the nursing profession. Her experiences throughout her 25 years were very diverse
and her suggestions of not staying in the same place for too long, to experience as much as I can
definitely hit home. Her suggestion expanded on that there are so many different fields and
focuses to experience in the nursing profession, and to go and try them out, because you’ll
know when you are where you’re supposed to be when you feel it. In my interview, I asked the
nurse what she thought makes a good nurse and her response was a nurse who is at the
bedside and maintains their integrity. Judd & Sitzman mention “Nurses must be self-confident
and present themselves as proud to be the registered nurses they are. They should be in charge
as they prioritize patient care and keep track of the situation in whatever manner works for
them. Nurses who are really professionals do “not just work [their] shift, but embrace [their]
work [being] the brightest and the best” (Judd & Sitzman, 2014, pg. 302). We as nurses should
be proud of what we are and the moves we have made to acquire our title because we’ve
earned it.
As I look at my practice, I have found that the best way to impact history is by bestowing your
knowledge onto oncoming new nurses. According to American Nurse Today, “The goal of the
preceptor is to provide valuable teaching and learning experiences as to role model safe patient
care using evidence-based practice” (American Nurse Today, 2014). While being a preceptor,
you are instilling your knowledge into this new nurse, so that they can become well-versed in
providing patient care. By passing on your knowledge, you are creating history because this
nurse that you taught will eventually precept a new nurse themselves and pass on their
knowledge that they have acquired by working, creating this chain of bestowment of
knowledge. I feel that this passage of knowledge is how a nurse like myself is creating history.
