Shared Governance Journey Paper
Shared governance in nursing describes how nursing staff and leadership come together
to develop and implement decision-making processes and relationships within an organization.
The development of this model is key to providing quality care, positive patient outcomes,
patient satisfaction, and nursing satisfaction. Having staff that is engaged in the decision-making
process and have a vested interest in the process promotes a culture of excellence. A facility
must address the differing needs within a community while following the mission and vision
statements for the facility. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of a shared
governance model at Saint Louis Medical Center by discussing and identifying the components
of the shared governance model and key components, provide supporting evidence for
implementation of the model, and provide examples of the importance of the shared governance
model and how it impacts nursing.
Shared Governance Model Components
To develop and implement shared governance at SLMC, three components need to be
implemented for the success of the process. The components that provide the structure of shared
governance are professional accountability, clinical decision-making, and distributive decision-
making (Porter-O’Grady, 2019). Using a transformational leadership strategy will align all staff
with the shared vision that provides motivation and empowerment for the team to take ownership
and accountability for their work and the care provided (Oss, 2020). This concept promotes the
development of a partnership among all healthcare providers using collaboration, positive
working environment, and produces positive patient outcomes using the shared vision.
Another concept of shared governance is the development and implementation of a
professional practice structure. To implement this structure at SLMC would consist of forming
