PART I: MISSION STATEMENT
Western Branch High School Mission Statement

PART II: CHARACTER EDUCATION
Character Principle 1: Trustworthiness: Teacher will utizlize the chalkboard write a list of trustworthiness
traits. Teacher will define trustworthiness: doing what you say you are going to do. Students, will then in
groups of three to five, spend 15 mintues exploring other meanings of trustworthiness and using a methaphor
or simile to compare traits of a trustworthy person. The students will create an image of the person using a
piece of paper reflecting the metaphor or simile used and share their drawing with the class.
Character Principle 2: Honesty: The teacher will introduce the importance of honesty in written
communication. The teacher will discuss tactics that mislead or deceive others when writing about an event.
Students will research and view a political advertisement and give a write brief summary of the
communication and that the intent of the advertisement. Students will be give two minutes to discuss with a
peer what they think was being communicated and if they agree or disagree with the adverstiment and why.
Students will then discuss with their partner how the information can be used for common good.
Character Principle 3: Leadership: The teacher will show students the video, “Everyday Leadership,” by
Drew Dudley. The teacher will then dicuss characteristics of a leader and what makes a person a leader.
Students will discuss the importance of “servant leadership” and create a poster project that reflects the
characteristics of a leader using photos, words, and pictures from magazines and books.
Character Principle 4: Responsibility: The teacher will divide the class into three groups and read the
handout on: Responsibility Situation. Each group will read a scenario and discuss the point of view of the
character and examine the role of responsibility in the situation. The teacher will call on one student from
each group to share the perspective of each scenario and suggest what they should do. After sharing the
decision, the teacher will relect and discuss each person’s responsibility to self and others.
Character Principle 5: Perserverance: The teacher will show students the video, “Passion, Priorities,
Perserverance.” The video presented by Larry Jacobson encourages students to focus on their passion to
fulfill their dreams and ideas. The teacher will define perserverance and share a personal experience on
perserverance. The teacher will then ask students to think of a time when they perservered or mastered
something that was difficult. Students will then write a short essay on, “Why do you think perserverance
