Activity: Managing the Operations Function
Direction: Answer the following questions based on your knowledge gained from this module.
1. What is the difference between effectiveness and efficiency?
Based on my understanding, effectiveness means doing the right things,
whereas efficiency means doing things right. Hence, an individual is effective when
he/she achieve its goal and produced the intended results. Likewise, a person
completes the right activity by identifying what needs to be done. On the other hand, a
person is efficient when he/she accomplished the goal and ensures minimal waste or
used the least amounts of resources. Hence, efficiency is used to do the fastest way in
the least expensive way. In addition, even though efficiency could be the wrong thing, it
was still done in an ideal or perfect way. Thus, effectiveness is the capability of the
management to achieve the desired targets whereas efficiency refers to doing the task
correctly with a minimum amount of effort.
How does this apply to you as an individual?
As an individual, I apply the use of effectiveness and efficiency in my daily habits
just to ensure that the time, money, and effort is being managed thoroughly. Every time
I wake up, I wrote down a to-do list just to identify what needs to be done. Hence,
completing all activities within the day is effective considering that I accomplish my
desired goals. On the other hand, my life as an individual is efficient since every time
there is a task like doing laundry, learning a new hobby, budgeting I make sure it was
done perfectly in the fastest way without putting in a lot of effort. In addition, I’m one of
the people who loves shopping but after I know how to be an efficient buyer, I learn to
spend money mostly in needs just to avoid a future waste. Thus, doing both
effectiveness and efficiency is important in my daily life.
How does this apply to your school?
Becoming an effective and efficient student is the key to excel in school and in
extra-curricular activities. Similarly, I apply effectiveness in studying through avoiding
procrastination and following what is plan. My life as a student before is unproductive.
Even though everything is done before the due date, that doesn’t change the fact that
life becomes harder. Cramming is a bad thing and should be avoided to be effective in
studying. Hence planning a study session shows effectiveness if it went smoothly. On
the other hand, I do school projects, tasks, and other activities efficiently considering
that it was done optimally. Hence, I used the least number of inputs with the highest
amount of output. Thus, effectiveness and efficiency are both important in my school
journey considering that it help me to become a better student.
