Ethical and Policy Factors in Care Coordination
Hello, my name is Katrina Tyler, and today's talk will cover care coordination, ethics,
and policies affecting nursing home care and patient safety. Care coordination is critical to
providing safe and high-quality care to nursing home residents. Nursing homes, alternatively
referred to as skilled facilities, are certified healthcare residences for patients who require a
higher level of medical care than an assisted living facility can give. Nursing facilities are
frequently hired when family members cannot care for their loved ones. Some of these reasons
may be because family members feel overwhelmed due to the patient's mental or physical
decline. In 2014, approximately 1.4 million inhabitants lived in nursing homes in the United
States, representing 2.6 percent of the population over 65 and 9.5 percent of the population over
85. (Wang et al., 2018).
Care Coordination
Let us begin by gaining a basic understanding of care coordination. Care coordination
entails organizing patient care activities and sharing information among all key stakeholders
involved in a patient's care to achieve a higher level of safety and effectiveness. Six foundational
structures, according to research, are required for nurses to expand and sustain care coordination
roles. Included are the following structures: Engage patients, families, and caregivers;
Demonstrate competence and readiness; Optimize teams and collaboration; utilize
documentation and information technology in health care, assess the coordination of care, and
recognize how care coordination is billed and reimbursed (Anderson & Hewner, 2021).
Therefore, what are some ethical and policy considerations regarding care coordination in
nursing homes?
