Karl Marx is considered to be one of the founding fathers of sociology and the most critique of
everything existing (Little et al., 2014). His most remarkable contribution to the world of sociology is his
theory on how different parts of the society interrelate. He stated that, 'society could be utilized
rationally or logically'. Marx's contribution to sociology looked at the society through the analysis of
economic systems. He saw that the distribution of power within the society was structured in a top-
down manner and was unevenly distributed in that, it was controlled by the wealthy who owned and
controlled means of production. This formed a sociological perspective known as conflict theory. His
theories have not only been useful in understanding how different components of society relate, they
have also been useful in different areas of sociology. These ideas are still followed in the school of
sociology today.
What perceptions of Marx have you been exposed to in your society, and how do those perceptions
influence your views? We live in a society where we are sold the narrative that the rich get richer, and
the poor - poorer. While I think of Karl Marx's theory, in real life there are several ways that we all have
been exposed to his theories, as it applies to not one region but the world in general. I grew up in a
society where majority of the citizens were of lower and middle class category.
I observed the few of the upper class category extorting the poor through cheap pay for services, which
if you look at it only further enriched them, as they were getting alot done for cheap. This has helped me
broaden the perception that there is a need to treat all classes of the society fairly, because in the end
we're all human beings. This can be achieved through equitable sharing of resources, where everyone
gets a fair wage for their work, in order to enable them grow and strike a reasonable balance of equality
in society.
