Leadership Observation
ECA 380 Becoming an Early Childhood Education Leader in Today’s Society
In my first journal, I wrote about my current boss, who is an extremely effective leader,
and I discussed my first boss as well who wasn’t a very effective leader. Looking back, I’m glad
that I have the experience that I had with my first boss because it taught me to really appreciate
the kindness and support that my current boss offers. I’m the leader I am today thanks to both of
them, it taught me how important it is to show your employees how much they are appreciated
and to be led by example. My current boss is a transformational leader and my first boss used
more of a transactional leadership style.
The two bosses I spoke about couldn’t be more opposite, they ran the schools in two
different ways. My first boss felt like things needed to be done in her way while my current
employer allows you to do things your own way as long as they are effective, and the kids are all
safe and happy. My current boss also always empowers her staff and shows appreciation while
my first boss did little to show appreciation, she seemed to point out flaws instead of pointing out
things we were doing right. Kelsey, my current boss has an open-door policy, and truly focus on
having great communication with staff and parents. She also leads by example; she personally
fills in for us if we need help and always has a positive demeanor even on stressful days where
we are understaffed or are having internet issues that interfere with our app that updates the
parents. She handles each hurdle with grace while my first boss would come through like a
hurricane placing blame and would put the entire school on edge.
