ECA 380: Becoming an Early Childhood Education Leader in Today’s Society
Leadership Vignette: Leadership Styles
There are several different types of leadership styles when it comes to early childhood
education. Not all of them are as effective as others, and some leaders are a mix of two or three
styles. After reviewing the eight styles this week, I narrowed down my choices to three styles
that I feel reflect my style of teaching. The three leadership styles that I chose are full range,
balanced, and principled. Each of these leadership styles have different characteristics that a
leader needs in order to be effective. They are also all incorporated into making daily choices and
running centers in different ways.
Personal Leadership Styles
After reading about the different leadership styles, I relate most to three which include full range,
balanced, and principled. Full range is a mix between the transformational and transactional leadership
styles. The reason I identify with this style is because I believe every situation should be treated as an
individual situation. When one leadership style is dominate over all others, all situations will be treated in
the same manner which isn’t really the best choice. Somethings should be treated more carefully or
should be handled using different perspectives. This leadership style allows the leader to use different
behaviors and characteristics depending on the circumstances. The second style I relate to as a leader is
the balanced style. This style is easily explained, the leader makes sure that balanced is maintained
throughout the center. I relate to this style because I believe there should be an equal balance when setting
goals, including teachers with these goals, giving teachers more responsibility, and focusing on tasks
while maintaining order. My last leadership style is principled, this style focuses more on core values. The
values that I find important include honesty, trust, and caring. These values should lead employees and
