PSY-102 – General Psychology Topic 2 – Sensation, Perception, and Consciousness Sensation and Perception: Application 2. Difference Threshold a. Early in the morning, to completely wake up, I have to tune in to music to gain motivation for the day. Difference Threshold is, The minimum difference in physical stimulation required to recognize a difference between sensory information sources. (Grison, Heatherton, Gazzaniga, 2017, p. 160) My ears are exceptionally delicate toward the beginning of the day, as I am yet to be awake, and my family room is calmer in the day, so to accomplish the right volume for my ears to hear the music, it ought to be at a low to medium volume. Around the evening or closer to the night when I have individuals over or when I am totally awake, to hear the music at the volume and the occurrence that I would like, I need it to be more intense in volume than the beginning of the day. 3. Sensory Adaptation a. In New York City, in the summer, the sun is at its high point through the day. Sensory Adaption is, A decrease in sensitivity to a steady level of stimulation. (Grison, Heatherton, Gazzaniga, 2017, p. 162) When I am driving back home after work, the sun is lower than normal, because the sun soon will be set. Even though the sun is low, my eyes in generally will get blinded by the sun. When I put shades on, they are yet very sensitive to the bright light, however after a minute or two, my eyes are not blinded by the sun, and are back to their usual state and I can see better, even though the sun is in similar position from where it was before I put my shades on. 4. Dark/Light Adaptation a. As I have poor vision, I usually schedule a yearly eye exam to check my eyes. Dark Adaptation is, the procedure including dilation of the pupil, increment in sensitivity of the retinal rods, and recovery of rhodopsin by which the eye adjusts to states of reduced illumination. (Dark Adaption, 2017). The eye doctor examines a particular part of the eye. I have stigmatism nearsighted, the specialist would check if light is hitting my retina accurately, she diluted my pupils with medication by doing that my eyes were more delicate and sensitive to the light. Without the special shades, my eyelids will close because the sunlight harms my eyes. 5. The Gate-Control Theory of Pain a. As somebody who stumps their toe every now and again, I recognize what it feels like to have a brief timeframe with pain involve. The gate-control concept of pain was, set forward by Ron Melzack and Patrick Wall in 1965, is the thought that physical pain is not an immediate result of activation of pain receptor neurons, but instead its perception is modulated by a joining between various neurons. Ron Melzack and Patrick Wall recommended that there is a gate system, which is in the central nervous system it opens and closes to be able to send the messages of pain through the brain. Pain gate concept is used to clarify phantom or chronic pain. (Das, 2009, para. 1) When I hurt my toe, my bone, and muscles were compacted for a brief amount of time, causing agonizing pain. The pain was so immense that it sent a signal straight up my spinal cord to my brain, acknowledging that I am in pain. The gating system open and let the pain signal to be seen in the brain. Soon enough, the tissue, bone, and muscle from my toe are recuperating and are no longer again in pain. The gating system at that point closes, never again tolerating the pain signals to reach the brain, so the brain is no longer sending messages that I am in pain. 6. Perception a. Once in a while, I lay down outside with my companions and gaze toward the sky at the clouds. Perception is, The processing, association, and interpretation of sensory signals in brain; these procedures result in an internal neural representation of the physical stimulus. (Grison, Heatherton, Gazzaniga, 2017, p. 157). I usually can see a cloud differently than my companion. For example, while looking toward the sky, I saw a cloud shape as a duck. My companion saw a bunny shape. I can say that I saw a cloud that was in a shape of a duck since I saw a part of the cloud as the duck’s bill, while my companion saw that same part as rabbit's ears. Our processing, association, and interpretation of what was seen caused our perception to be different, however we both looked at a similar cloud. 7. Choose One of These – Closure, Proximity, Similarity, or Simplicity a. I like to have everything organized, particularly with regards to the work area in my apartment. Similarity signifies, that things which share visual characteristics, for example, shape, shading, size, texture, value or orientation will be viewed as having a place together.(Mullet, Sano, 1995) on my window, one half contains plants, and the other half has photos and notes from my family. It could be perceived as similarity since I gathered the plants together because they are both green, while I am gathering together photos and notes from my family since they both allow me t

Application

Directions: Making concepts personally relevant to an individual helps to learn them. Below are
several concepts from your reading. Provide a psychological definition of the term and connect it
to personal example in your life. Each concept should be a minimum of 50 words with citations
to support your examples. List all references at the end of the list in APA style. Do not use
examples in the book!

Example:
Sensation – I like listening to my music before going to sleep, but if my parents hear my music
after 10 pm, I get in trouble. If my music is below their absolute threshold, then I won’t get in
trouble, because they won’t hear it. It is really hard to keep it below their absolute thresholds
because it seems that even the faintest amount of sound coming from my room is detectable. In
this example, the absolute threshold is the lowest amount of volume that they can detect up to
50% of the time (Grison, Heatherton, & Gazzaniga, 2017).

1. Absolute Threshold

a. There are times; I thirst for water. However, I do not like the taste of pure

ordinary water. An absolute threshold is,

b. The smallest measure of physical stimulation required to distinguish a sensory

info half of the time it is present. (Grison, Heatherton, Gazzaniga, 2017, p. 160).

When I am in the mood for flavored water, I can take a package of flavor and

pour it into my water and enjoy the drink, but I am not a sugary taste kind of

person. Therefore, I will pour the flavor into my water and taste it to make sure is

not sweet. I could pour a little amount, to enjoy the taste, and stop and save the

leftovers of the solution. Even though my sister could empty the entire solution

into the water, and still will not be satisfied with the taste and will get another

, package to make it sweeter. My absolute threshold could be a teaspoon of the

flavoring. However, my sister would
