Article Analysis
This paper will provide this writer’s analysis of the three types of models of supervision.
There were three articles chosen with the model descriptions and tenets that are applied to
supervision. The quality, model, and personality of the supervisor will show what type of
guidance the supervisee will receive at their site, this will have a profound effect on the student’s
learning experience. In closely looking at each model it will benefit the supervisee with
understanding of each and how these apply to the type of supervisor they are looking to work
under. In the early focus of supervision models the focus was on training and efficacy of which
model the supervisor was using, as supervision evolved three models emerged developmental,
integrated, and orientation specific ( Leddick, 1994).
Models and Tenets of Supervision
There are three main types of models in supervision Psycho- therapy based, Developmental
Models and Social Role models. In the psycho-therapy model, the role of the supervisor is what
theoretical orientation prefers to use, not only with supervisees but also in their own client work.
In this model it follows the same techniques and theories used in therapy, specifics of modalities
used are psychodynamic, this primarily focuses on the supervisee and what they experience as a
counselor. There are several types within this model that include the supervisor helping the
supervisee to growth and learn from this model. Cognitive Behavioral just like the therapy
modality a supervisor using this type of supervision, this also includes bridging each supervision
session to the next and allows for an agenda to be set lastly person-centered which follows Carl
Roger’s theory, often supervisors will have the supervisee to videotape the session for discussion
(Hackney, 1984).
