Inserting an indwelling urinary catheter can be beneficial to patients that may have urinary retention, urinary incontinence, surgery or other conditions such as dementia. The main disadvantage is that indwelling urinary catheters may cause urinary tract infections. The most common type of hospital acquired infections have been found to be urinary tract infections. A catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is caused by an indwelling catheter. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2015), “Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) has been associated with increased morbidity, mortality, hospital cost, and length of stay.” CAUTIs account for up to 9,000 deaths per year, which is a major issue because they are preventable.
