Performance Improvement and Quality in Health Care
Topic 6 Discussion Question 1:
What is the difference between primary and secondary data? How can primary and secondary source
data be used to drive CQI? Provide a specific example of how each source can be used to drive CQI.
Primary data for CQI is collected to measure a process related to performance improvement. This data
can be collected over a fixed time frame or through a sample. Primary data sources are typically selected
to meet the needs of the CQI through identification of the goal of the project and the target population
affected (Solliceto & Hardison, 2020). An example of data selected over a fixed timeframe might be data
related to surgery case on-time starts using real-time data from the surgical schedule.
