Based on the interactive learning community case study, The New Harbor Community Center is

planning on expanding the center in efforts to develop a homeless shelter for teens (Laureate

Education [Producer], 2016). Many of the teens that utilize the facility, do so out of necessity as

they are homeless yet continuing on with their education. For some of the children, the center is

the only place where they can receive a hot meal. This effort to proceed with the shelter is not

free from opposition within the community. There are many people who do not support the idea,

so there appears to be a need to resolve the conflict soon.

Conflict Wheel

When conflict arises, it is important to determine the root cause factors which can be

accomplished by looking at the conflict from different views (Mayer, 2012). The Wheel of

Conflict is a tool that can be used to help determine the root of a conflict. It consists of five (5)

outlining areas with a person’s needs at the heart. The areas are emotions, communication,

history, structure and values.

Emotions

During any conflict, emotions have the propensity to run high. This is not always a

negative attribute. Mayer (2012), states that sometimes a person may have an emotional release

that allows the other person to possibly understand the true feelings of a person. Many times,

these emotions are squelched or concealed, however, by allowing a person to open up, may be a

relief for the person harboring those emotions as well as the person who is able to hear it. This

can itself bring understanding to a person’s perspective that someone may not have known. Their

release of one’s emotions must also be exhibited at the proper time. It may not be the wisest
