Cost of Living City of St. Albans Shakee G Philbert Ashford University BUS372: Employee & Labor Relations (BWK1634A) Instructor: Maria Kithcart September 12, 2016 Introduction The St. Albans Issue The problem in the city of St. Albans.  The unionized police force has claimed that during the past 10 years, they have received minimal cost of living increases that do not reflect what other police department across the states have received.  The St. Albans Police department is a community oriented full-service department which provides: administrative, patrol, investigative, crime prevention, dispatching and emergency management service. (The Official Website of the City of Saint Albans, Vermont, 2016)  However, the police officers' salaries have remained unchanged.  This leaves St. Albans Police department behind in term of wages.. Why Give The Raise?  Since the city is home to two college university the St. Albans Police Department plays a crucial role in ensuring that peace and stability is within the city of St. Albans.  These officers put their lives on the line everyday to protect and serve the St. Albans citizens and the value of their public service should be reflected in a decent salary.  Its important to note that police officers protect our property, homes and families to the point of sacrificing their very own lives. How many people can say they do that for a living? What Statistics Say….  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a Police officer is paid a salary between $33,000 to $96,000 as of August 2016. With the average salary for a police officer being $48,000 per year nationwide.  According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, New police recruits earn an annual salary of $49,500, which is above the national average.  This is a great injustice, it is simply unfair that St. Albans Police officers are paid below the national level.
