Student Exploration: pH Analysis
Vocabulary: acid, acidic, alkaline, base, indicator, neutral, pH
Prior Knowledge Questions (Do these BEFORE using the Gizmo.)
1. Acids are substances that produce hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water. Lemon
juice is an example of an acid.
A. What does lemon juice taste like?
Lemon juice has a sour taste. This is because lemons contain citric acid, and lemon
juice is predominantly made out of lemons. Acids and foods with acid in them usually
taste sour because of the concentration of hydrogen ions in them. Since the tongue
gains ions, the taste buds consider it sour, and we taste any foods with acid in them as
sour. That is why lemon juice, which contains citric acid, is sour.
B. What does it feel like if lemon juice gets in your eye?
Lemon juice burns and severely irritates the eyes. This is because lemon juice
contains citric acid, which is very mildly corrosive. While citric acid barely irritates the
skin, more sensitive areas such as the eyes can be harmed by it, which in turn causes
irritation and a burning sensation.
2. Bases are substances that produce hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water.
Hand soap is an example of a base.
A. What does soap feel like?
Soap is slippery. When soap is in the water, it is even more slippery because the soap
(base) dissolves the oil in our skin, which decreases friction greatly. They react to the

, acids in our skin and feel slimy and oily.
B. What does soap taste like?
Soap tastes bitter and burns the inside of our mouths. This is because soap is a base,
and does not react well with our gums and parts of the roof and floor of our mouth. Our
saliva reacts with the soap and creates a mushy displeasing and an almost metallic
taste in our mouth.
C. What does it feel like if soap gets in your eye?
Soap stings and irritates eyes, and can cause harmful damage to veins and sight
momentarily and sometimes permanently. Soaps are an alkaline substance, and
usually have a pH of around 7.5 to 9 whereas the human eye has a pH of 7. Because
eyes are extremely sensitive to variations of pH, soap in eyes can be harmful and
cause problems in your eyes as the human body tries to counter the harmful effects of
soap.
Gizmo Warm-up
The strength of an acid or base is measured on the pH scale.
The term “pH” is short for “potential of hydrogen.” It is a measure
of how many excess H+ions there are in a solution. The pH scale
runs from 0 to 14, with 0 representing the highest concentration
of hydrogen ions. Acidic substances have a pH below 7, while
alkaline substances (bases) have a pH above 7. Pure water has
a pH of 7 and is considered neutral.
The pH Analysis Gizmo allows you to find the pH of a variety of
liquids. In the Gizmo, check that the Substance in the tube is
Ammonia, and click Test. Wait until the animation is finished.
