Complete anatomy of the thigh, including vasculature, nerve supply, bones, muscles and actions. Relevant clinical correlates can be made using the chief action and nerve supplies as they are clearly mentioned in the document. It is also supplemented by some pictures and diagram. It is the quickest review of thigh which is a subpart of lower limb anatomy, good for revision and also for studying.

THIGH ANATOMY

ANTERIOR COMPARTMENT OF THIGH // FLEXOR COMPARTMENT

Chief action: Flexion of thigh at hip joint

CHIEF NERVE: Femoral Nerve (L2, L3, L4)

* Exception: Psoas Major- supplied by anterior rami from L1- L3 (spinal nerve)

Muscles of ACT (FCT)

▪ Psoas major- origin : lumbar transverse processes, intervertebral discs, and
adjacent bodies from TXII to LV

Insertion: lesser trochanter

-Only muscle in ACT with DIFFERENT nerve supply i.e. ANTERIOR
RAMI FROM L1-L3

▪ Iliacus- origin: iliac fossa
Insertion: lesser trochanter

▪ Sartorius- origin: Anterior superior iliac spine
Insertion: Anterior surface of Upper end of TIBIA
-Along with flexion of thigh at hip joint; it flexes LEG at knee joint & helps in
LATERAL ROTATION.

▪ Quadriceps Femoris- 4 muscles that form same tendon (ie. QF tendon that
continues to become patellar ligament)
-2 muscles that form the QF tendon & attach to patella are VI and VM
-All of them have the action: EXTENDS LEG at KNEE JOINT

1. Vastus Lateralis- origin: lateral part of inter-trochanteric line on femur
& lateral lip of linea aspera
Action: extends leg at knee joint
2. Rectus Femoris- has 2 heads ~ straight head origin: anterior, inferior
iliac spine
~reflected head origin: ilium just superior to
acetabulum
*Action: flexion of thigh, extension of knee
3. Vastus Intermedius (VI) – origin: upper 2/3rd of anterior and lateral
surfaces of femoral shaft
Insertion: forms QF Tendon & LATERAL margin of patella
Action: extension of knee
4. Vastus Medialis (VM)- origin: intertrochanteric line & medial lip of linea
aspera

, LR 2 of 11 LR
Insertion: forms QF tendon & MEDIAL border of patella
Action: extension of knee

Patellar ligament- extension of tendons of quadriceps femoris

-extends from base of patella to tibial tuberosity

-Aka infrapatellar ligament
