A. SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE
1. Key Findings
● Alcohol-impaired driving deaths rose from 25% in 2013 to 45% in 2019 in Spokane
County and are now higher than in Washington State and the United States (CHR&R,
2021).
● Spokane County has an excessive drinking rate of 20% while Washington has a rate of
17% and U.S. top performers have a rate of 15% (CHR&R, 2021).
● Injury deaths are at 93 per 100,000 in Spokane County, which is significantly higher
than the state rate of 67 per 100,000, and U.S. top performers are at 59 per 100,000
(CHR&R, 2021).

, Spokane County, Washington lies in eastern Washington on the Idaho border. It has a
population of 522,798 people which is a 10.9% increase (USCB, 2020). In comparing this
with average growth in the United States, Spokane County is growing 4.6% faster than the
national average (USCB, 2020). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Spokane County is
densely populated with 267.2 persons per square mile as compared to the national average of
87.4 (2020). This area is primarily White, with 88.9% of persons being of that race (USCB,
2020). In addition, only 7.4% of Spokane County residents age five and over live in a
household where a language other than English is spoken (USCB, 2020).
In Spokane County, 93.8% of people are high school graduates or higher, which is
significantly higher than the national average of 88% (USCB, 2020). However, only 60.8%
of persons sixteen and older are in the labor force (USCD, 2020). In fact, according to the
U.S. Census Bureau, 12.9% of Spokane County residents live in poverty (2020). In addition,
the per capita income is nearly $3,000 less than the United States average (USCB, 2020).
