Cyber Crime Task Force Plan
Executive Summary
The world of technology had drastically grown at an impressive rate. Technology has
driven society to be more aware of news, more knowledgeable on information, and more open as
a society. It has been seen that technology plays a major role in the crime investigations world.
The use of modern day technology has tremendously helped solve crimes within the country.
With that being said, this new world of technology also plays a role in being used to commit
crimes within the St. Louis area. The crimes that are being committed are: computer hacking,
identity theft, human trafficking of adults and children, and child pornography. Due to the high
volumes of these cyber-crimes, the St. Louis Police Department Commissioner has implemented
a Cyber Crime Task Force. The KMOV covered the announcement of the Cyber Crime Task
Force, “John Large of the Secret Service Criminal Investigative Division said cybercrime has
grown far beyond the days when teenage hackers would break into a system just to see if they
could do it. Today, organized criminal groups are breaking into financial systems. And many of
the criminals are based overseas” (KMOV.com, n.d.). This Cyber Crime Task Force will oversee
all cyber-crime investigations within the St. Louis County in Missouri.
Cyber Crime threats in St. Louis County
The Cyber Crime Task Force, in the case of St. Louis, has two departments that tackle the
offenses within the cyber-crime investigations department. The first department would be the
General Assignment Unit, which has trained computer forensic examiners within the Computer
Lab of the Regional Computer Crime Education and Enforcement Group of St. Louis. This
department covers fraud and identity theft on a large scale. (St. Louis, n.d.)
