Family Health Assessment II
Every family contributes significantly to individual’s members health and well-being.
Nurses have a moral and ethical role in supporting family participation in their health care
practices (Wright & Leahey, 2012). Social determinants of health (SDOH) are complex
environmental and social forces which impact on individuals as well as population health
outcomes within a certain culture in their process of development, working and living
(HealthyPeople2020, 2020). Among the SDOH key contributing factors are availability of
resources, value systems and political systems. Consequently, family health is very important
when evaluating and developing health promotion strategies and determining the areas that
require improvement (Green, 2018).

, Running head: FAMILY HEALTH ASSESSMENT II 2
Mr. Karl accepted to participate in a family focused functional interview. Indeed, the
report indicated that the family members are at risk of developing some health disorders. Mr.
Karl is employed as an engineer with a road company and his wife is a certified nurse assistant in
a nursing home close to their home. Three of their children are in privately owned colleges; thus,
they pay a lot of money for their school fees. The parents, therefore, work for many hours for six
to seven days in week. Sometimes they don’t have time to prepare healthy foods for the family,
so they rely on fast foods. Secondly, they lack enough time for health exercises to keep fit. In
fact, the kind of exercise they do is not enough; thus, three of his children are overweight.
Appropriate action must be taken to prevent development of overweight related disorders such as
bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, liver diseases, asthma,
bones and joints diseases, sleep apnea among others. Mr. Karl was guilty in his eyes when he
said, “Sometimes we eat too much of what we love than what is healthy like Pizza, Cakes, that is
why the doctor said my cholesterol is high and some children are over-weight.” His statement
indicates he has a condition called hypercholesterolemia.
Consequently, if action is not taken the earliest possible, he might suffer from related
disorders such as cerebral vascular accident or stroke, peripheral artery disease, heart attack or
aortic aneurysm among others. Lack of enough sleep significantly contributes to his stress;
therefore, making him very sleepy and tired. Mr. Karl is a family man and loves his family. This
is seen during their dinner time gathering and eating together. However, there are major health
concerns in this family especially to Karl himself and the three overweight children. If situation
is not resolved, the father will be incapacitated by the diseases or even death. Children will be
left without any health insurance benefit; hence, poor health services. In addition, other needs
will not be met such as completing education, enough foods, affordable housing and clothing.
