IOP2605 Human Capacity Development NOVEMBER 2020 EXAMINATION. Question 1 1.1 Cairns and Malloch (2011) definition of learning breakdowns learning as an interface between a person’s mind and a socially constructed community of practice. There does not need to be a choice between the person and societal context of learning. A person can put together meaning within the social context. Learning is the result of the interaction of being actively involved and takes into account experience and thinking from a person’s lifespan. It is continuous learning that thus occurs be it formal as in tertiary education or informal learning such as on -the -job learning. A person does not merely see learning as taking place as only in a classroom i.e. by design but experience and practice are also part of learning. Social infrastructure can aid in developing learning. 1.2 The four principles of brain based online learning are listed below followed with a brief description on each of the principles. Meaning and understanding as the first principle elaborates on the fact that a person’s brain is actively creating and seeking meaning and understanding. it connects experiences from before and current learning environments. there is however a significant difference between meaning emanating from rote memorisation and meaning generated from an authentic learning experience. Meaning which is created and processed differs from person to person. each person would have different understanding and meaning thus making it unique to different individuals. 2 IOP 2605 Exam OctNov2020 Emotions in online learning, the second principle, involves the centre of the brain which is known as the limbic system or emotional brain. This part of the brain along with the prefrontal cortex, controls a person’s emotions and feelings. Brain based research has shown that learning and memory are also linked to this limbic system and a person uses the feelings and emotions to store and remember information. Emotional chemicals such as adrenaline, serotonin and dopamine can also add to this experience building stronger neuronal networks as there is a relationship between emotions and neuroplasticity. Collaborative knowledge construction, the third principle of brain based learning in terms of online learning applies to the adult learning in the online setting. This learning occurs when engaging in group settings either students or work colleagues and is regarded as real life or socially created. Lifelong learning and neuroplasticity, the fourth and final principle relates to cognitive learning . this learning process incorporates the conscious and purposeful navigation process constantly detecting, downloading updating and reformatting meanings that are entrenched in various multifaceted and interrelated mental maps accessible to a person and group. This type of learning is described as a set of complex mental acts with some traceable patterns. these are interrelated and include encountering novel situations, searching related data about the situation, analysing this data and changing experience accordingly. These mental acts can flow upward or downward between an individual, group or organisational levels . It is unbounded yet time constrained .
