(6) [20] QUESTION 2 Read the following excerpt and then answer the questions that follows: The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in a new climate of uncertainty that is fuelling protectionism, and which is playing into nationalist narratives. Globalisation is under significant threat, as governments scramble to reduce their vulnerability to the virus, by means of limiting the amount of global trade and flows of people. With the imposition of border closures and strict migration measures, major disruptions have occurred in Africa’s global supply chains, with adverse impacts on the existing levels of employment and poverty. The African economies that are overly reliant on single export-orientated industries, such as oil and gas, are expected to be severely hit. This situation is further aggravated by the tumbling oil prices and by the lowered global demand for African non-oil products. The agricultural sector, which should be able to buffer such shocks, is also being affected by the enforcement of lockdowns that threaten people’s livelihoods and sense of food security (Yaya, Out & Labonte, 2020).
