Costovertebral angle
- Location of the back overlying the kidneys
Costovertebral Angle Tenderness
- Tests for kidney stones /infections
Pancreatitis
- Has acute, midepigastric pain, radiating to the back; sometimes to left scapula or flank,
severe nausea and vomiting
Cholecystitis
- inflammation of the gallbladder; typically comes from gallstones, causes colicky pain to right
shoulder , indigestion, mild jaundice
Bowel sounds
- May be diminished in pregnant women as intestines have been displaced upward
Bowel sound assessments
- Assess before percussion and palpation to avoid increasing peristalsis
- note character and frequency
Hyperactive bowel sounds
- loud, high-pitched signal increased motility
Hypoactive bowel/ absent sounds
- Follow abdominal surgery or with inflammation of peritoneum
, Dehydration (signs of)
- Tinting of skin/ mucous membrane, urine color, urine output, elevated BUN & createin
Borborygmi
- loud, gurgling bowel sounds signaling increased motility , hyperactive bowl sound
Tan stool
- cirrhosis of the liver, viral hepatitis
Melina
- Black tarry stool
Occult stool
- blood in stool

- inspect
- auscultate
- palpate-light, deep
- Percuss-indirect, direct
Hepatitis
- caused by a virus, symptoms - fever jaundice, nausea , vomiting, tan stool

- BUN & Creatine low
GFR greater than 90
