Part 1
Your assignment is to choose an objective relevant to math for the primary grades. You
should use your state math standards just as you did with science for Assignment 4. Then
use the lesson plan outline below to create a math lesson.
For this assignment, instead of an initial activity, you will start your lesson with a
“motivating question,” to not only engage students in the lesson, but to offer the
opportunity for a brief informal pre-assessment. The lesson should end with evaluation of
both yourself and your students.
A breakdown of what is expected in your assignment is below:
This lesson plan is designed for kindergarten students to help them represent addition and
subtraction by using fingers, objects, verbal explanations, expressions and objects. Students will
interact in a classroom setting where they would learn different to add and subtract by working
with teacher, in peers and group discussion. This lesson plan requires three class periods of 30 to
45 minutes each.
, Motivating Question: How many ways can we add and subtract with grapes?
Learning Target: In class I will introduce the students to the grape math game.
I will remind my students that when we subtract it means
taking away and when we add it means combining two or
more numbers. Students will be placed in groups of twos.
Index cards will be given to the students to write down each
problem that needs solving. The students will now flip the
cards over so they can write a complete equation. For
example, the students will write the equation on one side
2+3 and on the other side =5. Each student will be given ten
blocks and two additional or subtraction flashcards. To
keep them entertained in math I will mentioned that the
person
who receives the most points will be rewarded with grapes.
Objective/ Standard: To represent addition and subtraction with the use of
objects and actions to understand the concepts of adding to
and taking from. The key vocabulary words are addition,
subtraction, bringing things together and apart.
Resources/Materials: Pencils, index cards, grapes
Advanced Preparation: The day before class I will write on the black board 2 + 3
then see if the students can solve the problem. If a
significant amount responds with the correct answer then I
know they are fully prepared for the lesson.
Activities/Tasks: Step 1.
Each student will be given some grapes, a pencil and index
card. The students will start with addition.
