, Week 3 presents two key components of quantitative research studies: design and sampling. Although
many people say that research proves that XYZ causes ABC, in reality, there are very few quantitative
research designs that can support a cause-and-effect relationship between variables and none that can
make this statement that this is a 100% relationship. The reason for this is the high level of control over
variables needed to say that XYZ "always" caused ABC. This level of control (or lack of control) is present
within the research study design. To evaluate a research study for quality and possible use as evidence
for practice, the study design must be carefully reviewed. Sampling becomes important in the ability to
generalize study results to individuals who did not participate in a research study. Let's start with design.
Outcomes
Develop knowledge related to research and evidence-based practice as a basis for designing and
critiquing research studies. (PO 1, 2, 3, 5)
Weekly Objectives
Describe the impact of the representative sample upon the results.
Describe the importance of control within quantitative research study design.
Discuss techniques useful in controlling extraneous variables.
Explain each of the three categories of quantitative research study design.
Distinguish between probability and nonprobability sampling methods.
Consider protection of participant or subject rights within EBP projects and research study design
traditions.
