RE: Employee Motivation
• Using the assignment template, identify at least three reasons that employee motivation
sometimes wanes.
Keeping employees motivated is a crucial part of being an effective leader. Many factors can
affect an employee's motivation and productivity at work. One aspect is when a leader makes
their employee feel disempowered. (Bateman, Snell, Konopaske) This is where the leader makes
the employees feel that they have no control and their opinion is irrelevant to the situation.
Giving employees chances to share their ideas and point of views about the decisions being made
by their superior can make them feel more confident in their ability to do their job and contribute
positively to their company. (Bateman, Snell, Konopaske)
The most common reason that I believe employees' motivation can sometimes diminish is the
lack of opportunity for growth. For a job to be fulfilling, the job needs to offer extrinsic and
intrinsic rewards. An example of an extrinsic reward is growth in a raise, bonus, or gift. An
example of an intrinsic reward is growth or knowledge gained from completing the job.
(Bateman, Snell, Konopaske) If a job does not offer room for growth, employees will eventually
get bored or seek employment that they feel offers them future advancement.
• Describe VP Thomas how he might use either Goal Setting Theory OR Expectancy
Theory to motivate his employees.
