AFL1501 assignment 2
Task 1. Story 1: It was in the year 1997 and we wanted a baby bother for your sister and since I couldn’t get pregnant the only other option was to adopt, now with it being just after Apartheid the logical decision for us would be to adopt a White little baby boy but I wasn’t raised to see colour so I adopted a black baby boy only weighing 2.5 kilograms we sat with a bit of a dilemma when it came to naming you as your father wanted to name you his full names but I did not like the idea of you having a full family name so we went with a half family name and half of a modern name that I liked very much thus you got the name “Phillip Dylan” that way you have a piece of our family heritage always with you as well as a piece of your own new identity to carry forward with you. – This story was from my mom and how I got my name her name is Reinette Badenhorst. Story 2: My mom and dad had me in 1998 and I was a bit of a surprise to them and as my mom was watching a Tv show one day she heard the name Dylan and she really liked it, she then went and found out the meaning of the name Dylan means and it means “Son of the sea” which was perfect for her as she loves going to the beach and there it was history my name was decided. – This story was from my friend and how he got his name Dylan and I’ve known Dylan since Grade 0. With both of them being Afrikaans I picked up a lot more similarities than differences in idiolect and they are also both from the same area Nelspruit Mpumalanga so there is also no differences that you would pick up from a different area, what I did pick up is that there was a difference in the formality of the way they spoke with Dylan being 24 and my mom being 60. I saw that my mom wasn’t using “slang” while Dylan was using a lot of slang as that is the way how we spoke when we grew up, but I can still perfectly understand and communicate with both with no confusion as that isn’t a big barrier as there are more similarities as previously mentioned.
