,What is the organisation you have investigated?
The organisation being investigated is called Severn Trent. The purpose of this organisation is to
provide water supply to different regions in the United Kingdom, Wales to the East Midlands, and
from the Bristol Channel to the Humber.
What are their main activities?
As every water company, Severn Trent is responsible to provide its customers drinkable water,
meaning water that is safe to drink without having any doubts of the state of the water and if they
have any bad bacteria. They are also responsible for the removal of impurities from the sewage
What departments did you
investigate? Department 1:
The first department I am going to investigate is the microbiology department, and they are
responsible for analysing water samples and see if the water examined is fully safe
Department 2:
The second department is the quality technician team, and they are responsible for
collecting water samples from different areas, they usually have their own truck with all the
equipment needed for then collecting samples and test them.
In Department one above what are the main tasks they carry out?
The role of the people working in the microbiology lab is crucial for the functionality of the
company and the supply of water for around 8 million people in the United Kingdom. Their job is
to analyse and study the presence of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and algae in different water
samples. Specifically, they test faecal contamination caused by the guts of mammals, which are
called Coliforms, Clostridium and Enterococcus. First, they collect a sample of water, and they try
to isolate E. coli/coliforms, Faecal Streptococcus, and clostridium in different and specific agar.
Then the microbiologist working on the lab try to grow the specific bacteria present in the water
sample so in case other bacteria are present they wouldn’t outgrow the specific bacteria they are
testing. The next step would be to analyse the bacteria, and then hand writing the outcome of the
analysis (a report) to hand in to their supervisors or their manager.
, Name 5 specific hazards that are present in this department, specify which ones are unique to this
department.
